Planning the funeral
Beautiful ceremony, worthy farewell
The next of kin are responsible for making decisions about the funeral.
In some cases, the deceased may have expressed special wishes for the funeral, which should, of course, be respected. It is important to see if the deceased has left a written statement with wishes for their funeral.
Burial will normally be held within ten working days after the death. With cremation, the ashes are usually buried within a few weeks of the funeral, and no later than six months after death.
The ceremony
The ceremony can be held in a church, or other faith’s, community premises, in the cemetery chapel, crematorium chapel, or in another suitable location.
You may wish to have the person leading the ceremony tell about the deceased’s life in a personalized eulogy. Before the ceremony, you and other survivors can make a shortlist of key points that you would like to convey and events in the deceased’s life. This will make the ceremony more personal. Any additional speeches should be relatively short and addressed to the family.
Hviding funeral home can assist you with the finding a time and place for the ceremony, and informing all the participants.
The relatives generally should meet 30 minutes before the ceremony begins. At most locations, it is common that the next of kin and their family sit in the front left. If anyone would like to contribute a wreath, or make a speech during the ceremony, this should be arranged in advance with the funeral home and the ceremony leader.
